Health is an interesting paradox. It is probably the most desired possession in the world, yet is also one of the least understood. If you were to ask anyone if they wanted to possess health, they would definitely answer “yes.” However, if you were to ask that same person to give you a definition of health or tell you what it means to be healthy, they would probably say they never gave any thought to the subject before. Eventually, you would get an answer something like, “Health means that you feel good.”
That is the concept of health to most people…feeling good. Yet, there are many people who feel very good right now ho are very sick. Some of them may even die in the near future…perhaps quite suddenly…and we will be shocked because poor old sick Joe was “feeling so good” just yesterday. There must be something more to BEING healthy than just feeling good.
As a matter of fact, if you were to look up the word health in a dictionary, you would find it defined as “wholeness; a condition in which all the parts of the body are functioning properly.” Dorland’s Medical Dictionary give us the most interesting definition of all; “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not MERELY the absence of disease or infirmity.” That means that there is much more to being healthy than simply feeling good. Dorland’s does not even mention how you feel and neither do any of the other dictionaries. Apparently, health is much more than merely feeling good.
This is the whole basis behind chiropractic. Chiropractic is the only healing science which bases all of its actions on restoring and maintaining HEALTH. All other healing arts are designed to treat DISEASE. Doesn’t it make sense that if we can maintain HEALTH in all of the people, that we will not have as much DISEASE to treat? That is the goal of chiropractic…HEALTH expression.
